Dental Bridges

in Boulder, Colorado

Bridges – Missing teeth can be embarrassing and unsightly. They can also lead to the deterioration of your jaw bone and surrounding gum tissue. Dental drift can occur further distorting the gap in your smile. Replacement options are available through general dentistry offices, like Dr. Birnbach's in Boulder, Colorado.

A dental bridge is one option for replacing your missing teeth. Dental bridges are made up of two crowns, which traditionally attach to the natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the missing tooth. These teeth, called abutment teeth, act as anchors for the false tooth known as a pontic.

Depending on your situation, Dr. Birnbach may recommend one of three types of dental bridges:

  • Traditional Bridge – This type of bridge involves attaching crowns to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the missing tooth. A porcelain pontic is attached between the crowns.
  • Cantilever Bridge – Dr. Birnbach may recommend this type of bridge if you have teeth on only one side of the missing tooth. The pontic is anchored over one or more teeth on only one side.
  • Resin-Bonded Bridge – This type of dental bridge involves the attachment of a pontic using metal bands which bond to the abutment teeth with a resin and are hidden from view. The amount of preparation on the surrounding teeth is minimal with this type of bridge.
The procedure Several appointments may be required to prepare and attach your dental bridge. During the first visit, Dr. Birnbach will prepare the abutment teeth to receive their dental crowns. An impression of your teeth and the surrounding mouth area will then be made which the lab will use to create a bridge, crowns, and pontic shaped to fit naturally in your mouth.

You will receive a temporary bridge to wear until the permanent bridge is completed. During your second visit, Dr. Birnbach will cement the permanent bridge into place. Once cemented, the bridge cannot be removed.

With proper dental hygiene and routine exams, your permanent dental bridge can last for many years. To prevent problems with your bridge, Dr. Birnbach recommends the following:

  • floss under the false tooth ( pontic)
    – use a fluoride mouth rinse for 60 seconds before bed. Do not rinse.
  • Limit sugar and starch intake
  • Avoid hard and/or sticky foods
  • Schedule routine dental examinations
