Dental Crowns
in Boulder, Colorado
Crowns – Over time the surface of your teeth can become damaged by chipping, cracking, decay and other dental trauma. That's why twice-yearly visits to a good general dentist like Dr. Birnbach in the Boulder, Colorado area is imperative for your long-term dental health. Dr. Birnbach can catch any problems early and prevent them growing into painful and expensive problems.
Dr. Birnbach has cosmetic dentistry training in doing crowns. Unlike fillings, which cover only a portion of your tooth, dental crowns cover the entire tooth to the gum line. If your tooth root is still intact, a dental crown can be placed over the surface to restore the natural look and strength of your tooth.
Onlays – This is a less invasive, more conservative form of a crown with similar outcomes. An onlay removes decay, restores the tooth to it's proper form and function and, according to the researchers, restores the tooth to nearly it's original strength.
The procedure – Before a dental crown is attached, the tooth must be thoroughly cleaned of decay and bacteria. Then it will be shaped to hold the crown. A dental impression will be taken of the tooth and its neighbors, as a model for the dental lab to follow in constructing your crown.
You will be fitted with a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. During this time, sticky and hard food should be avoided and special care should be taken when flossing. Once the permanent crown is completed, Dr. Birnbach will permanently cement it in place.
Dental crowns come in a variety of materials:
- All-Porcelain: These types of crowns are the most aesthetic solution to tooth replacement. They look most like natural teeth and can be matched to the color of adjacent teeth.
- Gold: Crowns can also be made out of gold, chromium, and other base-metal alloys. These crowns are more appropriate for out-of-sight molars, as their metallic color may not be desirable.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These crowns are made from a shade of porcelain chosen to match your natural teeth. However, as the gums gradually shrink with age, the metal under the porcelain can start to show through at the gum line.
In addition to restoring the strength and appearance of a damaged tooth, dental crowns are also used in other dental procedures. Crowns are used on either side of a false tooth in dental bridges and attached to dental implants to replace a missing tooth.
Dental crowns are not final – although with proper care they can last for a considerable amount of time. Good dental hygiene and routine dental exams are essential in caring for and extending the life of your crown.
