What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a permanent solution to tooth loss. It is an artificial tooth with an artificial root that is anchored in the jawbone. Unlike dentures or Bridges, implants replace the whole tooth, not just the visible part. The root implants are small cylinders made of titanium, a material that fuses well with bone.
When is a dental implant the preferred solution to tooth loss?
A dental implant is preferable to a dental bridge when the patient has healthy gums and jawbone. It is also preferred when the teeth neighboring those lost are completely healthy, since most bridges require that the neighboring teeth receive a crown to anchor the bridge. They also preserve the existing bone.
What is the procedure for dental implants?
The process of placing dental implants only takes two series of visits after your initial consultation. Please note that your two dental implants visits will be approximately three months apart.
- In the first visit, the implant root is put in place surgically. It will need about three months, sometimes more, to fuse with the bone in your jaw. Once it is fused, it provides a strong foundation for the new tooth or teeth.
- During your second series of visits the new artificial tooth, essentially a crown is permanently attached to the implant. The final result is a new and strongly supported tooth that is color-matched to the surrounding teeth.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
Implants are incredibly durable and will look and feel like your natural teeth. In addition to having a beautiful and complete smile again, you will be able to eat nearly all of your favorite foods like corn on the cob without worrying about your teeth moving or falling out.
How should I care for my dental implants?
Dental implants are, for purposes of care, real teeth. Treat them exactly as you would treat your own teeth, or better.
How long will implants last?
Because implants replace the entire tooth, they have the possibility of lasting a lifetime if properly cared for.
Who is a candidate?
If you have a tooth or teeth missing and you meet the following criteria, you are most likely a candidate for dental implants.
- Non-Smoker
- Not diabetic
- Is in good health overall
- Has healthy gums
- Has sufficient jawbone
- Has strong immune system
Of course, the only way to know for sure if Dental Implants are right for you is to have a dentist examine your mouth. Call or email us at boldersmiles today to schedule your initial consultation.
