Dental Fillings

in Boulder, Colorado

Fillings
– Daily brushing and flossing as well as routine dental exams are essential to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Even people with the best dental hygiene habits can become victim to tooth damage and decay. Cavities are one of the most common dental problems but also one of the most easily corrected. A visit to a general dentistry office, like Dr. Birnbach's in the Boulder, Longmont, Colorado area, can repair your cavities to ensure the continued health of your teeth. Also, Dr. Birnbach is a mercury-free dentist. You can trust us to remove and replace your existing fillings to assure your long-term dental health and safety.

Every time you eat, plaque collects on your teeth. If not frequently and thoroughly removed, the acids in plaque begin to eat away at the enamel on your teeth. These bacteria create holes in your teeth, called cavities. If left untreated, cavities can lead to further decay or even tooth loss.

The procedure Fillings are the most common method for treating cavities. During the procedure, Dr. Birnbach will begin by removing the decayed portion of the tooth. The removed portion will be replaced by a filling.

There are a number of materials that Dr. Birnbach may choose from for your filling:
  • Porcelain – Because this material can be colored to match your natural surrounding teeth, porcelain is the most aesthetic solution for your filling.
  • Gold – Fillings made of gold can last for a very long time. The material can be unsightly next to your natural teeth.
  • Composite Resin – Made of a resin and particles, this material is naturally white and a good option for fillings on front teeth and selected back teeth as well.

If the tooth decay is too substantial to be filled, Dr. Birnbach may recommend a dental crown.

With good dental hygiene, cavities and tooth decay can be prevented. Routine dental exams, including X-rays, can detect cavities in the early stages, before you begin experiencing any noticeable symptoms. Pain in the tooth often does not occur until there has been extensive decay, deep inside the tooth. This may require a root canal. This involves removing the tooth's inner pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth. That tooth now requires a crown. Prevention and early detection reduces the probability you will require crowns and other serious procedures later on.
