Sleep Apnea Treatment

in Boulder, Colorado

Sleep Apnea
– Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that causes interruptions in breathing. It is a serious condition that can disrupt the lives of you and your loved ones. If you or a loved one wonder if you're suffering from it, please visit an experienced dentist such as Dr. Birnbach in the Boulder, Colorado area, to have it diagnosed. It can become a serious health problem and the earlier it is detected, the better for your general health.

The most common type of sleep apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is caused when the tongue, throat walls, and other muscles become relaxed during sleep and obstruct the flow of air in the mouth and nose. In addition to preventing you or you loved ones from sleeping, sleep apnea can cause:
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke

Because it is a sleeping disorder, sleep apnea is often difficult for the person suffering from it to detect. But there are a number of symptoms that can signal its presence:

  • Snoring
  • Choking or gasping during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Fatigue or daytime sleepiness
  • Sore throat
Treatment Options Dr. Birnbach and his team offer Boulder, Colorado, sleep apnea sufferers several oral devices that can improve the quality of your sleep. Similar to athletic and orthodontic mouth guards, these devices encourage the free passage of air even while your muscles are relaxed during sleep.
  • The splint holds the tongue in a way that prevents it from blocking the air, allowing you to sleep without interruptions.

  • A mandibular advancement device holds the lower jaw slightly forward. This position keeps the throat tissue and muscles in the neck open, allowing air to pass smoothly.

  • CPAP, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is a device that can be worn when sleeping that blows air into your nose or mouth, preventing your airways from collapsing and obstructing breathing.
If a consultation with Dr. Birnbach determines you suffer from OSA, there are a number of treatments available to help you regain the ability to sleep without worry. If Dr. Birnbach cannot provide the sleep apnea solution you need, then he will refer you to a specialist who can help.
